The film is set in the 22nd century on Pandora, a lush and wild planet inhabited by creatures and plant life indigenous to Earth. It is inhabited by the Na'vi, a humanoid race with an innate bond to nature. The Na’vi—the "mother tree"--are threatened by Colonel Miles Quaritch of the Resources Development Administration (RDA), who wants access to Pandora's resources. The film's protagonist, Jake Sully (Sam Worthington), takes his place at RDA headquarters on Earth in order to infiltrate the Na’vi natives, but finds that both worlds are more alike than he thought possible. Jake Sully (Sam Worthington), a human/Na'vi hybrid, is a paraplegic who has been paralyzed from the waist down after a catastrophic accident on his underwater research mission. He is sent to Pandora, a lush and wild planet inhabited by the Na'vi, who are native to the planet. His mission is to infiltrate the Na'vi and understand more about them and their culture. On Pandora, he discovers that he has been transformed into an "avatar" of environmentalism. Near his avatar-body he can see and hear what his avatar-body is experiencing including a multi-sensory experience akin to virtual reality. This allows him to see the world around him as an Na'vi, including flying with Na'vi wings. He has trained for this mission under the supervision of Dr. Grace Augustine (Sigourney Weaver), who is an expert on Na'vi culture. Upon arrival, Quaritch (Stephen Lang), head of RDA's security force, informs Jake that he is to be his liaison officer. Because of his avatar body, Jake can do tasks that human soldiers cannot do, such as walking through Pandora's forest and riding its winged beasts unharmed. However, Quaritch has other plans for Jake and orders him to find the extraterrestrial energy, known as "powe berries", that will help him take human form. When Jake investigates one such "power source" (actually a hidden garden of food), he discovers what is happening to the Na'vi's animals. He also learns that he can see his avatar body, which was killed by Quaritch earlier in the mission. He cannot communicate with Grace or Dr. Gediman (Gedum Ndoom), another doctor overseeing Jake's training. Jake meets with Deshon (Wes Chatham), who tells him how he has been placing sensors on animals in an attempt to find out why they are dying. He feels that the only way to get answers is to get closer to the Na'vi. Jake also meets Neytiri (Zoe Saldana), a member of the tribe of central Pandora whom he slowly comes to love after overcoming her initial suspicion. Jake finds himself falling in love with her, but he is afraid of hurting her, and does not know how she feels about him. Neytiri's elder sister Mo'at (Michelle Rodriguez) warns him not to fall in love with anyone else.
